  1. Katakolon in Greece is a small, some would say sleepy, port town located about 15kms from Pirgos on the western coast of the Peloponnese. Its main claim to fame is a deepwater port suitable for the largest cruise ships you can imagine, along with the fact that it is only 35kms from Ancient Olympia. It is also where my wife´s family is from, so I have spent more than a few summer holidays sitting around Katakolon chatting with friends, watching the cruise ships come and go and exploring the surrounding areas.

  5. Zante international airport is located close to Kalamaki, in the south side of the island. It’s only 4.3km away from the town of Zakynthos and just 1km from Laganas.

Unfortunately, there isn’t any public bus service that runs from the airport, but there are always taxis waiting outside the terminal, and plenty car and motorbike rental companies to choose from.

The official name of the airport is “Dionysios Solomos” and it’s IATA code is ZTH. It’s the 6th busiest airport in Greece, and during high season, every day there are decades of scheduled and charter flights. However, due to the endangered loggerhead turtles – “caretta caretta” – which lay their eggs on the nearby beaches, planes are not permitted to land or depart after 12AM and for the whole night.
